What is a YogaBell?

There is no YogaBell, only our fusion class where we combine Yoga with Kettlebells for additional core strength training.  Laura and Angie created this fusion class with functional flexible strength in mind.

What is a “Kettlebell”?

It is a traditional Russian cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonballwith a handle.

Do I need to have my own Kettlebell or Yoga mat?

We have both mats and kettlebells for anyone to use.  We thought it was important to provide them in the beginning so that you can move up quickly in weight as you get stronger.  The weight you start with will not be the weight you end up with long term.

How heavy are the Kettlebells?

There is a wide range of weights available.  At our studio we have a small as 4 kilo (8.4lbs) to over 24 kilo (52.8 lbs).  If you are unable to handle the smallest weight we have adapted everything to the use of exercise bands which are a highly effective tool in building strength also.

What if I have never done Yoga?

The Yoga in level one is aimed at the beginner, you need no prior experience in anything to attend our classes.  It is a good place to start especially if yoga scares you a little!!

I am a female and don’t want to “bulk up”.  Will kettlebells make me look too muscular?

Absolutely not!  Kettlebells focus is on core strength, not building up individual muscles as in body  building.  Yoga tends to create long and lean muscles.  In addition to that is difficult for women to bulk up even when they work at it.  The female body does not naturally have the percentage of muscle mass as men or the hormones needed to make it.

I am not flexible enough for Yoga.  Can I do the class?

First of all, everyone is flexible enough for yoga.  If you have flexibility issues you need this class!  One of the greatest dangers to injuring yourself is a lack of flexibility.  Without fluidity to your muscles they will tear or pull when strained.  Having a flexible strength that can allow the body to fuction in all situations is our goal.

How often should I do YogaBells?

Much of that would depend on what other exercise you do and what your goal is.  If you are trying to get started exercising even once a week can make a difference to your body.  If you already do many other things it is a great way to cross train.  Many of our students have been cardio junkies who realized that they needed some strength training and some flexibility.  Many of our older students are looking for a way to stay functional in their lives into their older years.  We have had athletes looking to increase their core strength and heal their bodies from the stress of constant training with Yoga.  As a stand alone strength program three times a week is ideal.

I am not coordinated and feel akward, how hard is it to do YogaBells?

Our step by step approach can help anyone learn how to use Kettlebells safely.  You are welcome at any of our classes, but our Community Education classes offered through St Louis Park are aimed at the beginner.  Our goal is to make sure you have the confidence and the ability to safely practice on your own by the end of the Community Education Session.

Will YogaBells help with weight loss?

Yes!!  Strength training not only burns calories while you are exercising but at a higher rate for hours afterwards.    Building more lean muscle mass is the best way to raise your resting metabolism (how many calories your body burns). For every 10 lbs of learn muscle mass created 500 calories a day are burned.  It is a myth that aerobic exercise is the best way to lose weight.  It is an important part of a well rounded fitness program but not the best way to lose weight alone.

Why is flexibility important?

Flexibility is key to preventing injuries.  When muscles are stressed (either through exercise or accident) there is an increased chance of injury the more rigid the muscles, tendons,  and joints are.  Think about a rubber band and its ability to stretch to great lengths without breaking but yet it bounces back to its original shape.  A healthy body should be able to be moved, stretched, and stressed without breaking.  Many athletes are prone to injuries because they don’t put enough focus on flexibility.

Why is Strength training important?

The reasons are almost too many to list.
